Matthew Macfadyen

- learned to play go about 1965.
- Joined a regular go club at Oxford University in 1970.
- Reached about 4 kyu before graduating in Physics in 1974.
- Moved to Reading, improved to 3 dan during the first year of working in Meteorology.
- First attended the European Go Congress as 2 dan in 1975.
- British Champion 1978.
- European Champion 1980.
- Promoted to 6 dan after winning the 1981 London New Year Tournament
- Seven appearances in World Amateur Championship, best result 5th place in 1992.
- Numerous other tournament wins include 3 further European and 13 British Championships.
- Daughter, Lydia, born in 1991.
- Chosen as an official Teacher of the European Go Federation in 1992.
- 8 weeks spent studying Go Teaching and promotion in Japan in 1994.
- Finished 2nd. in the 1995 European Ing cup, probably the strongest European event ever.

- Interactive Correspondence Course by post and E mail started in 1997.
- Together with partner Kirsty Healey, finished second in the first European Pairgo Championship in 1997
- Finished second in the second European Pairgo Championship in 1999 (Losing to the Germans again).
- By winning the 1998 Irish Open in Dublin, became British, British Open, Irish Open, Scottish Open and Welsh Open Champion simultaneously.
- During 2000, finished 3rd equal in European Ing Cup, and reached semi final of Fujitsu qualifier.
- Total of 126 mentions in the BGA 'Hall of Fame' list of past tournament winners.
